Pears!

Mildly sweet and rich in flavor, a pear can offer the crunchiness of an apple or the juiciness of a peach. Pears are packed with healthy nutrients including dietary fiber, anti-oxidants, minerals and vitamins.

Pears provide 3.1 grams of dietary fiber per 100 grams of fruit. Regular consumption of pears may offer protection against colon cancer. Pears’ gritty fiber content binds to cancer-causing toxins and chemicals in the colon. The toxins then tend to be expelled, protecting the colon’s mucus membrane from contact with these compounds.

Figs

Fresh figs

Figs are high in minerals and fiber. They contain good levels of potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, copper and manganese. Figs are among the most highly alkaline foods, making them useful in balancing the PH of the body.

Five tips for incorporating figs into your diet:

  • Add figs to baked goods such as muffins, cakes or muesli bars.
  • Poach figs in red wine or fruit juice and serve with organic Greek yogurt.
  • Stuff fresh figs with goat cheese and chopped almonds. Serve as an appetizer or dessert.
  • Add fresh figs to oatmeal, porridge or breakfast cereal.
  • Make fig butter by boiling figs in fruit juice until soft. When all liquid has been absorbed, place mixture in a food processor and blend until smooth. Use as a spread on rice cakes, toast or crackers.
