It’s Been Proven: Pesticide Exposure Is Linked to Food Allergies

If you’re in your 40s, 50s or 60s, you may have wondered why food intolerance and food allergies were almost unheard of 25 or 30 years ago. For example, at one time almost every parent regularly gave children peanut butter on wheat bread without a thought about negative reactions.
A new study by researchers at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University published October 2, 2012 in the online Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology has an answer. The study concluded that high urine levels of dichlorophenols (Dichlorophenols are widely used as pesticides and for chlorination of water.) are associated with the presence of sensitization to foods and excessive use of dichlorophenols may contribute to the increasing incidence of food allergies in westernized societies.
The incidence of food allergies among children has indeed been on the rise, increasing 18% between 1997 and 2007, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The study’s authors noted previous published research that documents the increase in food allergies alongside an increase in environmental pollution and pesticide use, and decided to study whether the two were related. According to lead author Dr. Elina Jerschow, “The results of our study suggest these two trends might be linked, and that increased use of pesticides and other chemicals is associated with a higher prevalence of food allergies.”
